My origin story has its deepest imprint in my Music Together® teacher's honesty and vulnerability- she shared that she was nervous to sing in front of people, and that tipped the scale for me. Like so many grownups in our classes, I had told myself a lot of stories about my voice over the years. Although I sang in choirs when I was a teen, I never learned to harness the nerves of singing solo, so I never did.
On my honeymoon in Charleston, I made real a silent dream when I picked up a piece of blue chalk and finished the sentence Before I die I want to: be a backup singer. I hadn't ever told anyone that. I didn't talk about it. I didn't think I was "good enough" to seek out those opportunities. I didn't sing except in the shower and my car.
Fast forward to 2015, seated on the floor in a small distraction-free room with my baby girl at Music Together weekly classes. For her, I sang! For her, I wiggled and rolled over backwards. For her, I participated! An amazing transformation was underway...
As I was sitting there with my children in a Music Together class, I was overwhelmed with joy in my heart. It felt so great as a parent to be able to experience singing & dancing with my kids and other families. It was obvious that both me and my children were having a blast and it filled my heart with so much happiness.
I saw the passion our teacher had while teaching, in addition to having fun while doing it. I then said to myself, Wow! I think I can do this!! Even though I knew this was something totally different from my musical background which was singing in the church, and no formal training, but I felt a strong urge to go for it.
What’s so rewarding for me is that I love the sound of bringing families together to sing, bond, and make forever memories with their child. It is rewarding to know I get to be a part of building a music foundation for families!!
