Carrie Banwell, co-Director
When Carrie looks back on all the gifts her children have brought her, one of the greatest is that they brought music back into her life! After trying her hand at corporate finance and development, Carrie was happy to dust off the old guitar and start singing again. In the fall of 2000, Carrie started Music Together of Charlotte and has enjoyed singing, ringing, chanting, swaying, twirling, hopping and tapping with kids of all ages since then. She has a Certification Level II teaching certificate, and leads the organization with her able side kick, Phyllis Fulton.

Phyllis Fulton, co-Director
Teaching since 2001, Phyllis feels that Music Together is a true gift in her life, and is passionate about sharing it with anyone who will listen! Her musical 'story' is pretty simple-she's been singing her whole life, in a wide variety of settings; dancing will lift her spirits when nothing else works. She feels that MT is akin to a musical version of Montessori, which she taught before starting her own family. Even after years of teaching, Phyllis still enjoys the whole experience-meeting families, making relationships with people and children, and hopefully passing on the lifelong joy music has brought to her.

Allie Melaragno
Allie has had a lifelong relationship with music, her parents joke that she came into the world tap dancing. Growing up near NYC, Allie began a career in musical theatre as a young child. Some of her favorite experiences have been performing new works Off-Broadway, touring the country, dancing in Andrew Nemr’s tap company CPD Plus, and wearing many hats (well, wigs) in the musical Aladdin. Allie has since moved to Charlotte in 2020 and welcomed an effervescent little girl to the world in 2022. Music now plays a different, more meaningful, role in her life and sharing that is the biggest joy.

Amy Thomas
Amy grew up with parents, and grandparents who could turn anything into a song. Growing up she learned to sing, play the piano, and the trombone. Her rich musical childhood led her to pursue her bachelor's degree in music education from Appalachian State University, with trombone as her primary instrument. She met her husband at App. State while playing a trumpet and trombone duet together, and they continue to enjoy playing for local churches and events. Amy has three children who learned music through Music Together and the Suzuki method and they now play viola, violin, trombone, and an assortment of other instruments. She has a masters degree in Music Education from Winthrop, has completed all 3 levels of Orff-Schulwerk training, and Music Together Certification levels 1 and 2.

Emily Abernathy
Emily was born and raised in East Tennessee where music and dance were a joyful part of her life. Later, moving to Charlotte to start her own family, making time for music in community fell slightly by the wayside. Thankfully, life pulled her back into it when she attended Music Together classes as a nanny. There, she was reminded of how important it is to make music a part of family life. Emily is now a full-time mom to her two kiddos and feels so blessed to have found Music Together, as it combines several of her passions: children, singing, dancing, and an enriching community. Fun Fact: Emily is also fluent in American Sign Language so you may get a bonus lesson in class from time to time!

Kelsey Fuller
Kelsey is a lifelong musician and a native Charlottean. She graduated from Northwest School of the Arts before earning her BA from UNC-Chapel Hill. Her professional life has always blended her love of music and working with young people with her skills with logistics and project management. She was motivated to join our team after participating in Music Together with her daughter. “Seeing my daughter’s constant growth and deepening appreciation for music through the Music Together program has been downright addicting! I knew that I wanted to continue to be a part of that learning process even beyond my own children, and I feel so lucky that I get to watch the families in our classes have the same incredible experiences I’ve enjoyed.”

Katie Feeley
Katie considers music to be a lifelong companion, a source of strength, and a great community builder. She grew up in New Jersey where she spent most of her free time singing in choirs and performing in plays. In her 20's, Katie worked in international development, but she kept on singing too. In 2009, Katie moved to Pennsylvania and began working as a therapeutic staff assistant for children with autism. She also got her Music Together teacher certification. In 2010, Katie moved to Chicago for law school. There, she (of course) performed in the law school musicals. In 2013, she began practicing law as a children's rights attorney in Philadelphia. True story, Katie sang the "Hello Song" during her job interview. In 2016, Katie moved to Charlotte to practice immigration law. In 2019, Katie started Music Together classes with her daughters. Katie had so much fun that she decided to teach the program! She loves singing, dancing, and learning with you and your children. Katie hopes that you find class to be as fun, liberating, and inspiring as she does.

Lucy Chapman
Lucy grew up singing in church choirs and school choirs and playing piano. While listening to music is an essential ingredient in her life, most of her singing in recent years was making up goofy songs with her husband. And in 2015, she started taking their baby girl to Music Together classes. It was here that Lucy reconnected with the joy of singing and creating music while discovering a community of families and fellow friends who love the same thing. Lucy is delighted to be bringing Music Together into the lives of families in Charlotte.

Maureen Wermter
Maureen grew up in a musical family, her main inspiration coming from her mother, who sang on the radio and at other events with her siblings. Beginning in childhood, Maureen began exploring instruments by first teaching herself to play piano, then moved on to play the clarinet, sing in choirs, and participate in classes at the Children's Theater of Charlotte. As an adult, Maureen has become a collector of musical instruments and can play just about anything with practice! When she finally had children of her own, she was thrilled when she found Music Together, attended classes for about six years, and knew Immediately that she had found her calling, and started teaching as soon as possible. Children love her because of her silly and easy- going personality. She is happy to have found the perfect way to combine her love of children and music with the ability and desire to share this gift of Music Together with others.

Melissa Powell
Melissa was born in West Palm Beach, FL. As a child she discovered a love of singing and acting. From the time she could talk, she's been performing for anyone who would watch - even writing her own plays and musicals and organizing the neighborhood children into performing troupes! After receiving a B.A in Theatre, she attended Circle in the Square Musical Theatre Conservatory in New York City. Melissa discovered Music Together while she was a nanny (the best “day job” in the world!). She fell in love with the joy of singing with families and the excitement she felt from being able to share her passions with children. After apprenticing in NYC and bringing her newborn son to classes starting at 10 weeks old, Melissa and her husband moved to North Carolina and continued their desire to spread Music Together by opening Union County Music Together in 2008. Melissa has received her Certification Level 1 teaching certificate from Music Together and is excited to be able to sing, dance, and shake those eggs with the Music Together of Charlotte families.

Tameka Thomas
Tameka grew up singing in a musical family. Her mother taught her and her younger sister how to harmonize as early as 6 years of age. After singing in church choirs, Tameka began teaching and directing choirs throughout the community.
Music is an integral part of Tameka’s life. She is a founding member of the gospel group, Serenity, and currently mentors and teaches music to at-risk kids for a local mentoring program.
Tameka comes to the Music Together family by way of her son and daughter participating in the Rhythm Kids® class taught by Phyllis Fulton. Tameka has always enjoyed finding unique ways to engage children with music; Music Together has given her a platform to do just that!
Tameka loves to use her musical gifts to uplift and encourage others and truly feels that music is a universal language for all people and therapy for the soul!
